Governor Lock
A major research and development initiative of Governor Technologies: software protection aiming to make locally executed applications resistant to reverse engineering, including analysis carried out by AI agents. Sober, scientific and measured from the start.
Software on the customer's device is in the customer's hands
Software that runs on a customer's own device, a Windows executable or an Android package, is in the hands of whoever holds the device. Tools that automate analysis, and increasingly AI agents that drive those tools, lower the cost of taking such software apart. Governor Lock is Governor Technologies' answer to that shift: a dedicated research program with the ambition of making locally executed applications resistant to reverse engineering.
The initiative was launched in 2026 and designated a major Governor Technologies project. It is at its launch and conceptual research stage, and it is run as a scientific program: narrow, testable goals, measured and independently evaluated.
The shift
- Locally executed software is fully exposed to the device it runs on
- Automated analysis tooling keeps lowering the cost of reverse engineering
- AI agents can now drive that tooling end to end
- Proprietary logic, integrity and embedded secrets are what is at stake
The ambition
- Protection for applications that execute on the client device, with no mandatory remote execution
- Windows EXE and Android APK as the primary targets
- Resistance to analysis by both traditional tools and AI-assisted workflows
- Measurable protection, acceptable overhead and independent assessment
Wrap what exists, build in from the start
Governor Lock is planned as two complementary ways to protect an application, chosen by where the software is in its life.
Governor Lock Wrap
Protect an application that has already been built. Wrap is intended for existing compiled software, applying protection after the build with minimal changes to the application itself.
- For software that already exists as a binary
- Post-build protection pipeline
- Minimal application rewrites
Governor Lock SDK
Build protection in from the start. The SDK is intended for newly developed applications, where the software can be designed around its trust boundaries and the protection becomes part of the architecture.
- For applications designed with Governor Lock from day one
- Deeper architectural integration
- Protection as part of the application's design
| Question | Governor Lock Wrap | Governor Lock SDK |
|---|---|---|
| Where the software is in its life | Already built and compiled | Newly developed |
| When protection is applied | After the build | From the start, as part of the design |
| Changes to the application | Minimal rewrites | Designed around its trust boundaries |
| Depth of integration | Post-build pipeline | Deeper architectural integration |
| Status | Planned mode | Planned mode |
A scientific program, not a marketing claim
Governor Lock is run as a scientific program. The initiative states narrow, testable security goals and evaluates them honestly. Its discipline rests on four pillars.
-
1
Formal threat model
Every protection goal is stated against an explicit adversary: what the attacker holds, what the attacker controls and which tools, including AI agents, the attacker may use. Different trust assumptions are kept apart so that no guarantee is overstated.
-
2
Reproducible experiments
Protection is measured, not asserted. Experiments are designed so that results can be repeated, compared across approaches and challenged.
-
3
Independent evaluation
Protection claims are assessed by evaluators who did not build the protection. The program's own tests do not count as proof.
-
4
Patent review
Novel results are reviewed for patent opportunities as part of the program. Review is a step in the process, not a claim about its outcome.
